Kite

KITE

The wind blows
and bracing
both legs
against the ground
for the most part I hold steady

I had to
drag you out today
and I grit
my teeth against the
unfairness of it – taught, no doubt

But this is a happy day
will be
though I feel
a little shamefaced
with this show-offy kite

An Indonesian blue bird
brought back from a trip
and meant
for display
not to slip through the sky

When I came home
this time
it was
taking up space
in the cupboard

So I drag it and you
out
and in some miracle
of wind
it manages to fly

Despite yourself
you marvel
I can see it in your eyes
and with the bird
at the end

of its tugging leash
each
holding it tight
having
mastered its ascent

We feel closer, you and I
